Why Is This Important?
Your Dollar, Your Decision is a campaign to place a cap on local government spending that is breakable only by voter approval. The cap would tie local government growth to inflation, preventing government from growing faster than the citizens' ability to pay for it.
In 2007, the Florida Legislature placed a cap on property tax revenue, but it was quickly broken by over 40 percent of local governments. Many others raised taxes and fees to make up for the property tax revenue shortfall.
A spending cap will stop local governments' irresponsible spending and leave approval of spending above the cap up to the voters.
The goal of Your Dollar, Your Decision is to place the spending cap amendment on the 2010 ballot via petition.
